Carlton Urban Re-Generation
EXPERIENCE
OVERVIEW
Limited design construct competition for the re-development, re-generation and re-integration of Ministry of Housing sites in Carlton.
Carlton Urban Re-Generation is recorded in the supplied CV as an MGS limited design construct competition in Carlton, Victoria. The total area was 8.6 ha, with the Elgin Street site recorded at 14,820 sqm. MGS were lead architects in a consultant team with developer EKP for the re-development, re-generation and re-integration of three large Ministry of Housing sites in Carlton, working with architects BKK and Conner Houle and landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean. Michael Rahill was involved with overall concepts for all three sites, coordinating the work of other architects, and had detailed involvement with the site on the corner of Elgin and Nicholson Streets. The design sought to reconnect the sites to local street networks and development patterns, re-establish old road and lane alignments, extend existing Housing Commission era blocks at lower levels, locate a public park on the site edge, and introduce mixed-use development to encourage urban diversity.
