Carter Street Precinct
EXPERIENCE
OVERVIEW
Mixed-use precinct proposal at Carter Street, Sydney Olympic Park, connecting residential, community, school, green space and light rail edges.
Carter Street Precinct is recorded in the supplied PTW capability material as a mixed-use project for YMCI on Wangal Country at Sydney Olympic Park, NSW, Australia.
The project is recorded as a Design Excellence Competition winning scheme. Zone 5 Carter Street, Sydney Olympic Park is made up of two connected sites, 5B and 5C, within the Carter Street Precinct. The site is located to the south of Sydney Olympic Park and north of the M4 motorway.
It is adjacent to the proposed east-west pedestrian link connecting the light rail to the east of the site through to school open-community green spaces and the water's edge to the west. The site also sits among tall residential areas to its north, east and west.
The mixed-use project is intended to deliver an unexpected place that surprises and delights residents, workers, children and visitors; a magnetic and compelling place where a diverse group of ages and cultures can explore, linger and engage with multiple activities.
The site forms an important transition from nature, represented by waterways and green spaces to the west, to the city to the east. This transition occurs in both built form and usage: from low-rise scale buildings to high-rise, from community use to private use. The site becomes a transition and gateway to more open, less built-upon public spaces represented by the school and sports oval to the west.
The connection of spaces occurs at multiple levels, providing diverse activities from passive to active and from physical engagement to visual observation. Communal open spaces occur at various levels above the ground plane, including connecting bridges and rooftop podium levels, allowing a range of noisier and quieter activity areas suited to diverse needs.
