Walsh Bay Redevelopment Masterplan
EXPERIENCE
OVERVIEW
Waterfront precinct masterplan at Walsh Bay combining restored historic structures, adaptive reuse, new construction, residential apartments, theatre, retail and commercial space.
Walsh Bay Redevelopment Masterplan is recorded in the supplied PTW capability material as a waterfront precinct project on Gadigal Country at Walsh Bay, NSW, Australia.
HPA Architects, in association with PTW Architects, worked for Walsh Bay Partnership, a Mirvac / Transfield joint venture, on a project recorded at approximately $650 million (AUD).
The water and land-based buildings and vacant sites at Walsh Bay on Sydney Harbour offered residential apartments and an 850-seat drama theatre, as well as commercial and retail space. The redevelopment of the Walsh Bay precinct combined restoration of historic structures, adaptive reuse and new construction, reinvigorating an important but disused waterfront area.
The masterplanning of this precinct managed the insertion of new development in a historic area restricted by a permanent conservation order. In addition, the masterplan resolved the conflict between pedestrian and vehicular movement in a commercially sensible manner.
Recognition listed in the source material includes the Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Award, RAIA Lloyd Rees Award for Civic Design - Walsh Bay Redevelopment, Australia Award for Urban Design - Heritage Waterfront Award, and Planning Institute of Australia (NSW) Excellence in Planning - Urban Design - Plans and Ideas.
